About us

The Appleby Frodingham Works Athletic Club (AFWAC)was formed in 1921 to provide sporting and recreational activities for Steelworks employees and their families. With the change over the years in the structure of the steelworks (now Tata Steel), membership of AFWAC has opened up to include the whole community on the payment of a small membership subscription.

Afwac operates on three sites.  There are two major complexes at Brumby Hall on Ashby Road, Scunthorpe and at the Redbourn Grounds on Cemetery Road in Scunthorpe.  The third site are 20 acres of Fishing Ponds on Winterton Road.

Brumby Hall is based next to the North Lincs Councils "Pods" Indoor Sports Centre and covers 27 acres.  The grounds have a large Social Club and first class facilities for Football, Cricket, Tennis, Bowls and Hockey.  Indoor Facilities include Squash, Chess, Fitness. Photographic, Radio, Snooker and Table Tannis.

The AFWAC Vision Project which took place in 2011 has provided, at Brumby Hall, a full size synthetic grass Hockey Pitch, a Junior size 3G Muga Football Pitch and significant improvements to the Tennis Facilities.  These Facilities can be hired at certain times by contacting Rob Atkin on 01724 402134.

The 34 acres at Cemetery Road cater for a large Social Club, an 18 hole Par 3 Golf Course, Bowls and Football.

The Railway Preservation Society is a very active section based on the Steelworks Site.

Go to the individual section web sites for more information or contact the AFWAC office on 01724 402053.
